AZAB 2007 The Challenge: To race in an antique boat, N32 Araminta of Hythe, with only two people from Falmouth through the Western approaches and Bay of Biscay to Sao Miguel in the Azores and back, a distance of around 2,400 miles in aid of charity. James & Henry Walker, father & son, will enter the race to win and raise £50,000 for The Parkinsons ' Disease Society.
AZAB 2011
In 2007, two Nicholson 32’s, Araminta (a 1972 Mark X) and Quaker Girl (a 1965 mark IV) competed in the AZAB race from Falmouth, Uk, to Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, Azores . This race is held every four years and may be sailed single or two handed. The distance is approximately 1,200 miles each way, with a stopover between the two legs.
The Nicholson 32s, by coincidence, were sailed by two father and son teams and after 20 days at sea just one and a half hours separated them at the finish. Araminta was 2nd in the class and 6th overall, whilst Quaker Girl finished 3rd in the class and 12th overall out of forty five starters. Four Contessa 32’s also took part and all were well beaten by the Nicholson 32’s on elapsed time and therefore on corrected also.
Very few modifications to the Nicholson 32 have to be made to comply with ISAF Offshore Special regulations for Race Category 1 Monohulls. Therefore these fine yachts lend themselves very well to short handed offshore racing. However the Azores High does not suit them, but the strong winds often encountered during the race certainly do. Quaker Girl is entered and has qualified for the 2011 race and details can be found on www.azab2011.co.uk. With 100 entries and a large number of Contessa 32s entered, the competition is going to be very strong. Each yacht will have a satellite tracker fitted and the race can be followed on line from Saturday 4th June 2011

NicholsonCircle of the Low Countries / NicholsonKring der lage landen"...The purpose of the Circle is clear. The fleet of Nicholsons, beautiful and well founded as they may be, is ageing. In order to deal with the problems that go with age, there is an increasing demand for spares and for knowledge about concealed construction. A Circle like this one can provide a sound exchange of knowledge..."

Tsunami Boat Project: The Cape Pakarang Boat Yard was founded shortly after a tsunami devastated the coast of Thailand's Phang Nga province on December 26, 2004. Over 5,000 people died in the area, and the local fishing industry was destroyed. Along with other boat-building projects in the area, the Cape Pakarang Boat Yard project has helped to re-build lives and livelihoods in the aftermath of the tsunami by building boats for local fishermen.
