Web TV

Several manufacturers are now offering Web-by-TV converters. There are some content differences in the HTML to optimize it for a TV screen instead of a monitor. You have a set-top box that sits on your TV and plugs in the RF input (or possibly composite or S-video jack). This costs around $500 (1997). It has a 33.6 modem, a few Mb of memory and a fast CPU. You control it with an infrared remote (either with buttons or a trackball). Some sets offer an optional keyboard, possibly IR also. Currently the browser supports a superset of HTML2, sound files and some movie formats. Software is downloaded from the provider (like AOL) and in future may support HTML3, Java, VRML etc.. Your personal preferences, etc., are saved at the provider's end.
