Modems

The latest phoneline modems by US Robotics now do 33.6kbp/s. They don't work with anything else (yet) at that speed.

It's now possible to connect to the net through your cellphone. You need a Megahertz PCMCIA modem in your laptop and a Motorola flipphone with the little multiway jack. The Megahertz modem uses MNP 10EC compression/correction; if your ISP's modems are not compliant then things will get slow. Throughput is maybe 9600 bps after alls said and done.

(Other phones will work, but the cables cost more)

If a laptop's too big, you can use an organizer. Some models have terminal emulation and xmodem capability. A maybe 12x40 character real screen maps to a 25x80 virtual screen - painful, but not impossible to use. You can draw pictures and send faxes, too.
