Internet Services
The Internet offers many different services, and the number is growing
continually. For a fairly complete list, see the Unix
/etc/services.
Internet services may be broadly classed as Active, Passive,
or Interactive.
Active
The Internet can be used in an active way, as you are doing now. You
connect to the net, using the power of the human mind to filter information.
You are in control, but it takes up your time. In this mode you, as a user,
are connected to passive net services such as static Web documents or
ftp archives. Electronic mail may be viewed in this way also.
Passive
The Internet can work for you in a passive way. This document is a passive
entity, waiting for you to come and read it. By constructing passive documents,
you can provide information for people and other active agents to access.
Interactive
