Map Display Programs


OziExplorer is shareware mapping program from Australia. It can use scanned maps, BSB nautical charts, USGS DRG maps, and other map formats. It can upload/download waypoints, routes and tracks with Lowrance/Eagle and Garmin receivers and Magellan GPS receivers.

SeaClear is a charting aid, which, when connected to a GPS, will display the ship on a chart, as well as current position, speed and direction. New charts are loaded as needed when set up for automatic loading. The track may be traced to a file. Routes may be created and used to assist in the navigation. The GPS must be capable of transmitting the NMEA 1.5 or 2.0 RMC message. The Autopilot must be capable of accepting NMEA 1.5 APA or NMEA 2.0 APB message. Requires Windows 95. FUGAWI is a Windows scanned-map program which can upload/download, waypoints, routes, and tracks (vividly displayed in COLOR) with the Garmin, Eagle/Lowrance and Magellan GPS receivers. You can scan your own maps, or use BSB nautical charts or US DRG topographical maps available on CD-ROM.

GPS Utility is a freeware/shareware program for users of Garmin or Magellan GPS receivers. As well as upload/download, it provides facilities for mapping, sorting waypoints, filtering and selecting GPS data, digitising from scanned maps, track analysis and other advanced tools (for example, generating waypoints/routes from tracks). A variety of grids and coordinate formats are supported together with the import/export of many different file types. WinGPS is a Windows program which reads RMB or RMC sentences, and will display the track on a "plotting sheet" or on a map or chart scanned into a .bmp file. A Win3.1 shareware version of Win95 commercial version (WinGPS Pro) of this program is available from Stentec Software

IBIS is a charting and NMEA information display program by Ron Whately (rwhately@silcom.co).

Thomas M. Danninger has written some freeware moving map software for OS/2. It can use both scanned maps and drawn maps using USGS sdts data at the 100,000 to 1 level.

Global Navigation Software has a PC chart plotter program called "NavPak".

GPSS from Sunninghill Systems reads NMEA data, and displays position on a map, as well as providing voice directions to waypoints.

flexGPS by Thomas Schaefer is another map display program that can receive NMEA data from a GPS receiver. It will also upload/download data from Garmin receivers.

EPS (798,018 bytes, April 26/98) is a JAVA application that creates a charting program that runs in Netscape.
