X multiple depth

I have been playing with my XF86Config trying to get the most out
of
my card and monitor. I have managed to set the depth to 15, or 16 while
keeping
a decent sized virtual screen. Now when I try to bring up some games,
I get errors: Error: xdoom currently only supports 256-color PseudoColor
screens, etc. I found some documentation that said that I could possibly
have more than one depth.

from man XF86Config:

"Depth bpp
This entry is mandatory when more than one Display subsection is
present
in a Screen section When only one Display subsection is present, it
specifies
the default depth that the X server will run at. When more than one
Display subsection is present, the depth determines which gets used by
the X
server. The subsection used is the one matching the depth at which the
X
server is run at. Not all X servers (or drivers) support more than
one
depth. Permitted values for bpp are 8, 15, 16, 24 and 32. Not all X
servers
(or drivers) support all of these values. bpp values of 24 and 32
are
treated equivalently by those X servers which support them."

I can't seem to get it to work, but I'm not sure if I would know if it
was
working, as I have never seen it work before (do I use hot keys to
switch
between depths?). I am using an S3 video card with 2 Meg Vram. driver:
mmio_928
Trio 32/64, pci.

Anyone out there have any success with multiple depths?
