OK, it looks like I lied when I said that I was going to get the
cable modem. I have finally made my descision and I've gone with
adsl--Rogers wanted me to pay for cable TV on top of the modem-- I don't
own a TV.
So I went out and bought a ethernet card, NE2000. After getting it,
I'm not sure if it was the best choice (It was inexpensive though).
Apparently NE2000 cards use programed IO, so the CPU has to do the work.
Apparently some of the clones can be nudged into another mode and act
like a different card which uses some type of shared memory. Mine is a
Genius Lan GE2000III. Has anyone managed to tweek this card?
The installation went very smooth. My origional kernel had it as a
module, but I figured that it would get used enough so I recompiled it
into the kernel. I can see it by doing a 'ldconfig eth0'. It looks like
it's there. The IRQ and base address are just like I set them (I saw
this in '/proc/interupts' and '/proc/ioports'). From this point I'll
have to wait for BCTEL to hook up the line. The RedHat 'Control Panel'
appears to have a tool to configure it once the line is in. It will use
DHCP.
Has anyone had any problems with adsl? Is there something that I should
know?
Thanks
Jamie
