It depends on the ftp client and proxy you're using. Some
ftp clients have support for various proxies, some don't. I
personally use TIS' fwtk ftp proxy which will work with any
client - you just have to connect to the proxy via
"ftp <firewall addr>", enter <username>@<remote ftp site addr> as your
username, and continue as you normally would. Other proxies
may work slightly differently.

If you're running socks on your firewall, you'll have to
"socksify" your ftp client by recompiling it with some minor
changes - I haven't bothered to try this yet, but it didn't
look difficult when I reviewed the docs a few months ago.
