Then something went wrong after your install, perhaps? Maybe another
package was installed that was buggy and overwrote the "right" version
of that program??? Did you install any non-Debian packages or
software on that box not using the `alien' command? If so, maybe
the offending program got overwritten, perhaps.
I've been running Debian 1.3.1 since it came out and never had this
problem, and I've compiled around a dozen custom kernels over several
machines.
Perhaps a reinstall of binutils is in order? HTH.
