I just do

prompt off
mget *

for that.

This probably only works with the NetBSD ftp client. However, I
believe that the gnu program `wget' also supports proxies in some
way, and that's handy for transferring entire directories and even
trees. (That's how I keep my CPAN archive up-to-date.)

First find out whether your firewall supports ftp via socks. If it
