Just because you've got memory free dosn't mean that a program can
grab more. It might be running into a resource limit or something
like that, though that doesn't seem likely in this case.
Why don't you examine the source and see what conditions produce
that message? you could also run ktrace or truss on it and see what
it was trying to do when it bailed.
