I don't know what "EzPPP" looks like but the problem is certainly your
ISP. They replaced their usual login process with either PAP or CHAP.
It often happens when their try to use NT on dial-in systems. It is
suggested that CHAP provides more security but I'd say who's going
to intercept the carrier between the two peers? It's not like it's
going over many systems using TCP or anything.

That's because PAP/CHAP is transparent to the user in Windows95
and (s)he doesn't even know that they exist. Under Linux you
have to explicitly enable it by editing /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
or similar. I never done that.
