Re: CLUE - Canadian Linux Users Exchange

Hi, all.

Our announcement to c.o.l.a. concerning the July meeting elicited a
response from Matthew Rice of the Canadian Linux Users' Exchange.

As one might expect from a national umbrella organization, CLUE has
set up a Canadian LUG registry, links to Canadian LUG websites, a
mailing list for Canadian LUG chairs, etc. And we should probably
support this.

What really caught my eye is their interest in organizing a National
Installfest on the last Saturday of September (the 26th) and that they
"shouldn't have a problem getting give-away and install materials" for
us because "SuSE, RedHat, Caldera and Linux International are already
CLUE sponsors....."

They're also interested in establishing a presence at COMDEX/Vancouver
next January - something we talked about at the last VanLUG meeting.
Moreover, Matthew suggested that "CLUE would cover any expenses that
it could".

Anyway, here are some extracts from Matthew's message with a few
comments from me thrown in.

Sure enough, CLUE has a ream of corporate sponsors including Caldera,
Corel, Global Proximity Corp. (their web site host), Linux
International, Linux Mall, Perforce, Red Hat, Spellcaster, and SuSE.

Their site seems to be well-organized and actually has quite a bit of
useful "local information". For example, I had been talking about
having the VanLUG put together a list of Linux Consultants (Support
Providers) operating in B.C.

Sure enough, CLUE has already started a list, which includes Centurion
Services, Diminishing Networks, G.M. Systems, Hyperdream, Kinchlea
Computer Consulting, The Net Result, Pryor and Pryor Inc., and Troy
Ryder. I'm sure we could help them add to it.

We were planning on running an Installfest anyway. If CLUE can
provide both national publicity and give-away and install materials,
so much the better!

I guess that's up to the group! If you're interested, let's talk at
the VanLUG meeting on Monday.
