CD burners

Well, I've been following the discussion regarding removable media
on the list for some time, and it's made me think about buying a CD burner
for my Linux box. Now, I'm not looking to spend too much more than $500,
so I'm wondering what my options are; in particular, I'd like to know what
sort of drives are good for use with Linux. I don't have SCSI, so would an
IDE drive be ok, or should I look at getting a SCSI controller (religious
sentiments aside!)? I pretty much want it as a cheap way to back up data,
and perhaps to fool around with MP3s and audio CDs. The only drive I've
looked at so far is an internal HP IDE. Sorry if some of these questions
have already been dealt with on this list.
Thanks,
Joel Erickson
