If I'm understanding you correctly, the suffix is not case sensitive.
I refer you to the BootPrompt HOWTO,
file:/usr/doc/HTML/ldp/BootPrompt-HOWTO-3.html#ss3.3 on a Red Hat 4.2
system, also available on the LDP page at
http://sunsite.unc.edu/LDP/. The HOWTO also says that PCs should
properly report up to 64 MB.
I don't see a point in continuing to try to fix this in Linux only.
