I'm aware of the reasons, and I actually Cc on mailing list replies
occasionally myself. I'm careful when I do so, however, that I have
good reason to believe that it is important that the individual both
recieve the mail and do so as soon as possible. Otherwise it's just a
waste of both the recipient's time and mailbox space.

I guess the basic message is that if you don't know damn sure why you're
Cc'ing your message to the author, please don't. This, and other
etiquette tips are available in the List Etiquette Guide I maintain for
the mailing lists I run:

I use mutt at a site where I do some consulting, and find it quite nice
for the low mail load I deal with there. For serious mail load (I get
well over a megabyte a day between my home and work addresses), I've
found nothing to compete with Gnus under XEmacs.
