I was online for (holy crap) 7 hours today downloading all kinds of
errata and crap. I decided to look at /var/log/messages and noticed
that root was being identified as HIDDEN-USER, but I (userid kevin)
was not. I poked around and the only difference I can find is that
root's .noident is -rw-r--r-- and kevin's is -rw-------. Argh. No
mention of that in the man page (man identd).
I used the Redneck language option during the install. That was fun,
but now when I run any of that Red Hat configuration stuff, the
language is STILL Redneck. I thought it would be just for the
installation. :)
When they say you may not be able to boot off the third hard disk,
they mean it. I had a working and tuned 4.2 installation, and a 5.1
installation that I couldn't boot. I had to keep switching jumpers
around, changing the ids on my drives to switch sdb and sdc back and
forth to try to make everything work. I mounted the 5.1 and changed
the fstab and lilo.conf but I had lilo'd it when it was sdc, and
couldn't find a way to re-lilo it as sdb. Those rescue disks are not
exactly helpful. They don't hold enough. I ended up using the
installation program to "upgrade" my 5.1 to 5.1 ("upgrade" installs
packages that are newer than the existing packages) and then it ran
lilo at the end, and all was well. :) Now I'm manually configuring
this 5.1. I had thought they meant your boot loader had to be on one
of the first two disks. You have to have the kernel and all that
other good stuff on one of the first two disks, too.
The new window-manager configuration stuff is cool. fvwm seems to
work now, plus you get two other working (working!) window systems. I
like Afterstep.
Anyone know where this Electric Eyes thing is? I do have xv
installed. I think I've spent enough time online for one day.
There's only a very brief mention in the manual about Electric Eyes
and ImageMagick replacing xv, but that's it.
