Have you looked at ATAPI TR-4 drives? They're available from a number
of manufacturers, and store 4GB uncompressed. I would assume they've
got to be faster than a floppy or parallel port solution, and I've seen
the drives in the local computer papers for not much over $300.

I figure the perfect IDE setup would be two drives on the primaries,
striped for most filesystems, and a TR-4 and a CDROM on the secondaries.
If you've only got one hard drive, then put the tape and the cdrom on
the one controller and the drive on the other, since that way most
transfers will go between controller.
