I've had good luck with Frontier Computer - http://www.fronet.com/ where
you can order stuff online, ie: configuration you want, and get an
online quote from them. Like some others have mentioned, though, you
might have a problem getting some cheaper older configurations, although
they do offer some deals around $1000.00 for some slower Pentiums and
smaller 14" monitors, I think. Pick up The Computer Paper (free in lots
of newsboxes) and browse through the pages to see all the deals.
One store that doesn't inspire much confidence when you walk in (some of
the display counters are shipping boxes from computers and other
hardware they've sold) is ATIC on Broadway, just west of Main. I've
bought some stuff off them (and have a friend who buys there
exclusively) and haven't had any problems, either.
