I agree, with the added comment that elitism costs everyone. In the face
of the menace from Redmond, Linux scored the "Best Support" of all OS's
last year according to "Datamation" (I think, but luckily, someone on
this list will know for sure).

Elitism around operating systems sounds incredibly similar to the Warez
D00DZ, and their ilk. When I started with linux 4 years ago, it was
incredibly hard to understand. My stupid questions were answered
patiently on the various lists, and on the various news groups. I for
one do not begrudge new users the help and pointers they need, since I
got so much help.

That being said, I think pointers to web-based and other information
sources are perfectly adequate, because knowledge gained by doing the
research yourself is always more useful in the long term than the "type
this, and it will work" school of help.
