I have been trying to solve this all day without any luck. In
/etc/hosts, I have:
127.0.0.1 localhost
172.26.1.242 irix
When I ping those IPs it works. When I ping any other hosts on
the net (e.g. www.whitehouse.gov) it gets resolved using an
external DNS server. But when I ping 'irix' or 'localhost'
I get the error 'host not found'. Obviously, samba and other
daemons that call gethostbyname() don't work because they
can't find what host they are running at. What am I missing?
It's Irix but the name/domain setup is supposed to be the
same as on Linux and Solaris.
I noticed that the Irix box is missing /etc/nsswitch.conf
file where I presume it is configured in what order to look for
hostnames. I copied my Linux's /etc/nsswitch to IRIX and it
didn't work. If anyone else has an Irix machine can you please
send me your /etc/nsswitch.conf or whatever it needs?
Thanks,
Vlad
