The only reason Microsoft are in the position of control they've
got now is because the various Unix players couldn't get along.
Linux can in many ways be thought of as a brand-name. More of the
public recognize Linux over "Open Source", GNU, etc, but I think
few will argue LUGs promote more than just Linux, which is after
all just the Kernel.
As an aside, PLUG (the Portland Linux Users Group) are discussing
changing their name to be "Portland Linux/Unix Group".
This whole thing depends on cooperation.
