COMPARING DISTRIBUTIONS,
WHAT'S BEEN LEFT UNSAID.
I hope to distribute an extension of the table in the Hughes
article, comparing the package offerings of the most recent
distributions from
Slackware,
Red Hat, and
S.u.S.E.
Further, perhaps its only proper that we treat FreeBSD
as a Distribution. (After all, what is that "D" for in "BSD"?)
I've asked Curt Sampson to give a few minutes to it.
If there is someone out there who has looked at the GNU Hurd,
it would be good to hear about it.
(We may want to give more time to these and other
_open_source_ versions of Unix at later meetings.)
Regarding the Linux distributions, what probably most
needs to be said are things Phil Hughes would not dare
put in a printed article: what are the major LIMITATIONS
to each of
Slackware,
Red Hat, and
S.u.S.E. ?
It's easy for me to point out problems with S.u.S.E. I will.
I hope others will fill us in regarding Slackware and Red Hat,
and perhaps Debian as well.
