" VanLUG will meet 7 - 9 pm Monday evening (August 17)
" on UBC campus, in Brock Hall Annex, Room 351.
"
" The agenda calls for the last 20 minutes to be devoted to a
" Round Table discussion, which will lead into the informal
" discussions that follow the organized part of the meeting.
" There's a good article by Phil Hughes, comparing Linux
" distributions, in the August issue of the Linux Journal.
" I propose that we devote this particular Round Table to
"
" COMPARING DISTRIBUTIONS,
" WHAT'S BEEN LEFT UNSAID.
"
" I hope to distribute an extension of the table in the Hughes
" article, comparing the package offerings of the most recent
" distributions from
"
" Slackware,
" Red Hat, and
" S.u.S.E.

Michael Kofler's Book (from the German)
Linux : Installation, configuration, and use
(Reading, Mass. : Addison-Wesley, 1997)
[ISBN0-201-17809-5 Can434.95 ]
covers a lot of the differences, since
the superior S.u.S.E is more prevalent
in German, but the North American market
uses RedHat, Caldera and Slackware (Slack
is on the enclosed CDRom).
Besides the five appendices on the major
installations, at each stage of configuration
he points out differences in treadment of
files, configuration and style, e.g. p 205
the differing keypad assignments for use
with Xwindows, p 175 recompiling the kernal
and how the distributions differ in handling
that, many more.

A good book, though we hope Barbakati's book
in October is a quantum leap over his first.

I'd give Kofler to anyone, especially those
installing SuSE distribution, as the English
manual with 5.2 assumes many things that
Kofler is always explaining and not assuming.
