the reasoning here is that you are twice as tempted to record on a lossless
fully digital source/destination system than in an analog system (where you
always lose a bit with each new generation of copies). This is reason why DAT
tapes never caught on - the recording industry totally opposed a fully digital
recordable system without any copyright protection (only to be trampled by the
technology industry which evolved the read only CD format to a writable
format).
