Installfest Update

Hi, all.

Here's an Installfest Update:

If you signed up at the last meeting, you know that those interested in
helping out with the Installfest will be meeting at UBC (Brock Hall
Annex Rm 362) on Monday, August 31 at 7 pm to work out the details of
the Installfest. Everyone is most welcome to join us!

(BTW, if an alternative, more central location can be found for our
steering committee and special events meetings (for 20-25 people rather
than the 50-60 who attend our monthly meetings), that's fine with me.
Stipulation: It must be free of charge.)

I talked to Vicki McLeod (Marketing Coordinator - UBC Bookstore) by
telephone today. She confirmed that the UBC Bookstore definitely wants
to support our InstallFest. Minor problem: Few, if any, of the
Bookstore's regular staff are available on Saturdays. She assures me
that she'll have the terms of their support worked out in time for our
meeting on Monday.

An aside: She suggested that we arrange to set up a demo/display for a
few hours, perhaps on Thu, Sep 24 or Fri, Sep 25 to help *advertise* the
Installfest. One way to make it interesting: Have visitors sign a
petition or survey indicating what sort of Linux/UNIX products they
would like to see the UBC Bookstore carry. Linux versions of MATLAB and
Maple come to mind ;-)

Peter Wilson (Vancouver Sun - NetWorks Section) has confirmed that he
would like to run a feature on Linux and the Installfest in the
Thursday, September 24 edition of The Sun. (He's just responding now
because he's been on vacation and won't actually be back at work until
next week.) Note that Mark Wilson (The Province - Double Click Section)
confirmed his interest a week or so ago.

Brian Bray (VanLUG member and Minoru Development Corporation) has
offered to demo a Corel Netwinder PC at the Installfest. Offer
gratefully
accepted!

Jeff Almi and Vincent Janelle (VanLUG members) are working on the
installation checklists that we'll be using each time we install Linux
on someone's PC.

Chris Halsall (Chair, Victoria LUG) has put together a waiver for people
to sign before we install Linux on their PC's. (Just to avoid nasty
problems.)

Dana Epp (Chair, Fraser Valley LUG) contacted Red Hat Software on behalf
of the National Installfest. They have agreed to supply 10 RH5.1 cds,
as well as a mix of free "goodies" (such as T-Shirts, Mouse Pads..
anything with RH logos on it) for prize draws, etc., to each LUG.
They'll probably ship the packages next week.

The CLUE people in Toronto are continuing to work on getting prize draw
materials from our other corporate sponsors.

See you all on Monday.
