When did the 'pkg_add' come? I installed my HP about five or six month ago,
and the only thing FreeBSD I could find, was five tar files... No pkg_add
there, and I've never heard about any precompiled packages... (I need to
reinstall the machine, it's just so messed up).

Then you use some sort of packaging system and precompiled binaries (see
my coment/question above).
