It is not necessary to recompile the kernel that comes with Red Hat 5.1
to support masquerading. You may want to recompile it for other reasons,
but not for that reason. The kernel you get when you do an ordinary
install of Red Hat 5.1 was compiled by Red Hat to support masquerading,
and there is no need to do it twice.

This _is_ necessary. At the very least you need a firewalling rule that
says on what interface to do masquerading, and of course you should have
rules to keep out unwelcome packets from the outside world.
Note: These comments are based on the fact that the only distribution
mentioned in the message I'm replying to was Red Hat 5.1, and they are
not intended to apply to any other distribution.
