By the SMC 8216 I assume you also refer to the Western Digital
Elite or SMC Elite. You are right in stating that the Elite or 8216 is a
better card but not only because of the ability to hard configure the
card. The 3COM 3C509 Etherlink III is a great card for a Novell
server or workstation but is less than ideal for a Linux server. Has to
do on how it handles packets I am told.
The 3COM 3C509 is a great card and I have never had a problem
setting them up and making them connect. I normally will configure
them before use which is a bit of a hassle but they work in almost
everything. Actually, I have never had one not work for me.
