NT, Samba and encrypted passwords (was Installfest Aftermath)

Note that if you got WinNT workstation like I did by buying an education
priced copy of Visual J++, then you won't have this problem. The NT 4.0
that comes with J++ is SP1, and MS didn't default to encrypted passwords
until a later service pack. This is all discussed in the help files
with Samba, though probably a bit hard to find if you're doing a quick
skim, since the docs are spread through dozens of files, and loosely
organized at best.

There are no doubt reasons to upgrade service packs, but with my
machines behind IPmasq, and running NT only rarely, I'm not terribly
concerned about NT security holes. As Vlad said, in an office
environment, it is almost certainly a more significant consideration.

I was happy to find Diablo runs fine on NT, though my Soundblaster 64
drivers did not install cleanly. NT sucks, big surprise.
