Not sure who said this...Ted?
>> I live at a distance, but have a copy of the September issue of the
Computer Paper. While I think that ATIC has the best web site for prices,
from recent experience, they always seem to have higher prices, always
subject to change, and always seem to be out of stock, not to mention the
lousiest service. Frontier has good service, but middle of the road
pricing, as does MicroConcept. I haven't dealt with NextGEN, but they've
advertise the products I'm seeking, and hopefully they'll keep to their
advertised price, and will have stock as well.

Hey, maybe I'm bitter :) I've spent time as a small computer retailer, and
while I can't argue with their occasionally great prices, they would be the
last of the computer retailer I would buy anything from. I'm saying this
due to experience and the news.

Things I know for sure and have experienced:
Bought a computer with my best friends money from there, it arrived via
courier with the disk drive bay (one of the slide-on, screw-in types)
bouncing around the case along with ATIC's 512k vga video testing card. Of
course, we didn't try to boot it up, just drove over and demanded a fix.
Two weeks later we get it back, the 32 megs of ram that were supposed to be
EDO were not, we bring it back, somewhat annoyed, and it takes a full week
before it's ready for pickup (they would not allow us to change the ram
ourselves). Not impressed, throughout the process, they were rude,
ignorant, did not return phone calls, and reluctant to do anything about
their mistakes.

What I heard on the radio last week:
ATIC is being fought by a local resident for over-clocking a fraudulently
stamped CPU. While they probably did not re-stamp the cpu themselves, they
are responsible for making sure their supply is legal and correct. The guy
brought the computer back and wanted a replacement CPU, they agreed, and
replaced it with the exact same thing...an overclocked fraud CPU. Dunno
whether this is going to court or not at this point. Has anyone heard?

I'm sorry if it's not kosher to talk about this sort of thing on the
mailing list, but I hated to see someone here go there expected a great
deal based on lack of important information.
