VanLUG Email Archive

Archive; fun with Hypermail

Well, we've had over 700 messages in September - compared to
about 500 for the whole of 1996 and 1996 - a 3000% increase!

The list gets archived (most of the time) at
http://vancouver-webpages.com/vanlug/current-archive.html
with Hypermail (same as BugTRAQ)

This is actually a new link with a "refresh" meta tag which
now goes to http://vancouver-webpages.com/vanlug/1998-6/

I'd had various problems with Hypermail/sendmail and at some point
decided that hypermail ought to have some locking implemented, which
I added. I was then archiving the list on 3 different machines and trying
to recreate the HTML archive when it got broken, with moderate success.
I added a switch to hypermail to make it recreate the index pages
from nnnn.html files in an archive directory, and made a script
which would merge two or more directories, packing the nnnn.html files
down to increment continuously from 0000.
Together, I figured I
could take a missing chunk of archive from a Unix mailbox, run
hypermail on that, then merge it into the complete HTML archive.
This is what I did to the September archive, and in fact it worked
in so far as hypermail was able to increment the resulting archive
properly, and the links in the index were correct, but the
"next" and "previous" were wrong. A bit more typing, and the
script is now able to fix that too, I hope.

... maybe, just maybe, the archive is stable now ...

I also added a simple search utility - essentially "grep"
on the archive directories, and return a link with a pattern count.
A bit slow with 700 files ...
