The two things you want to check out are
IP Masquarading
DHCP
Things of note on ADSL
They have a site you have to log into each time you start up your machine.
Otherwise DNS gets screwed up instead of having your computer name in the
DNS it has the hardware address of the ethernet card connected to the
system.
If you use the same card all the time you will most likely have the same
ip address on boot up. If you switch cards for any reason be prepared to
have your ip address change. (I don't know of any other time the ip
address actually changed. Generally, the same one was reassigned.)
Since I haven't played with DHCP myself I don't know too much about it but
I do recall that my brother had to start up several processes by hand on
boot up just incase DHCP had not secured an ip address by the time those
services would normally start. (Off the top of my head services affected
were sendmail, apache, and inet)
