Our "real world" is full of regional colloquialisms. In this case, it's an
OS region rather than a geographic one.

Linux users use the term IP Maquerade because that's the name of the
software package that originally implemented this function. The name
stuck. The release of this package predates the RFC which describes NAT.

When in Rome... :)
