Do you have a NON-intel mobo? Like one with the ACER Labs Chipset?

On such a beast I was getting some goofy things too.
One time it was quite similar to the above symptom. I disabled
"PCI bus optimization (Experimental) in kernel config,
Made a new kernel and it has not occurred again.
