There's a probably-Microsoft-originated extension to PPP defined by
RFC 1877 that allows a client to query the other end for DNS server
info. I know that Livin^h^h^h^h^hLucent Portmasters have supported
this for a long time. I don't know if pppd can do this, but it'd be a
gross hack to stuff it into the resolv.conf each time (yes, I know
that's been done before).

I avoid the issue and run a name server for my LAN and for a DNS
cache. Given that I'm stuck with a POTS line it cuts down lookup
latency nicely.

Portmasters act as a nameserver server, and I assume other NASes do too.
