Maple is a symbolic computation package, more like Mathematica than anything
else. I think there may be a Linux/Intel version of it, but I don't know
about Linux/Alpha. It can be used as a standalone package, with its own
user interface.
Matlab is a matrix computation package - it mostly works with floating-point
numbers rather than symbolic math. It does have symbolic math capabilities,
for which it calls the Maple computation engine to do the real work - which
is why you often see them installed together. I don't know about Linux/Alpha
support for it either.
