Well folks, howdy, just wanted to mention a few books for some of the
people who commented on what to do with/how to use linux since the
install-fest.
1)Linux Network Toolkit by Paul G. Sery - avail at Book Warehouse for
about $55 - is Redhat 5.x specific, but covers the full range of info need
to install, setup and maintain a linux box, with ip masquerade,
firewall/proxy server, tcp/ip network setup and admin, Samba setup and
useage etc. Starts with assumption that you are probably coming from the
ms windows world. Highly recommended
2)Linux Undercover - avail at Multimedia Technolgies for about $50 -
basically a compilation of many of the docs, howto's and faq'a as put out
by the LDP (Linux Documentation Project) (url below)
ftp://ftp.ox.ac.uk/pub/linux/LDP_WWW/linux.html#ldp
3)Linux In a Nutshell - published by O'Reilly & Associates (ORA) - avail
at Book Warehouse, Half Price Book Store and Granville Book Company -
good
command reference and general info.
4)Building Internet Firewalls - another ORA book by Brent Chapman and
Elizabeth Zwicky avail at Chapters - not specifically linux related but
good security info
5)Samba: Integrating Unix and Windows - by John D. Blair, one of the
Samba
developers - avail at Multimedia Technologies.... usually, I picked up the
last copy last week, they are very good about ordering more stock if you
ask politely. approx $40
6)TCP/IP Network Adminstration - by Craig Hunt, pub'd by ORA - about $35
at Book Warehouse
7)Essential System Administration - pub'd by ORA - about $35 at Book
Warehouse - covers major flavours of unix including out beloved linux.
These are the ones I have in my library, but there are many others, maybe
we could add this as an addendum to the recommended hardware list or start
a list of books that people are happy with......
If you can't find these locally, all of the titles are avail from
http://www.amazon.com
Linux friendly book and software stores in Vancouver (not in any special
order)
1)Chapters (4 or 5 locations)
2)Book Warehouse (5 or 6 locations in greater vancouver) - 20% off list
price for most titles. 3)Granville Book Company (large selection of Linux,
Unix and NT stuff) 4)Discovery Multimedia - books and software 5)Half
Price Computer Bookstore (3 locations) - as the title says ... 50% off
6)Multimedia Technologies - my personal fave! - books and software,
usually have the latest Redhat goodies!
enjoy!
Maybe in a few days I'll do up a list of helpful websites for linuxites!
