There's no reason you can't run xntpd without a permanant connection,
either. If you connect, do an ntpdate, start xntpd, and stay
connected for a couple of hours it should get your drift calculated,
so your computer keeps time more accurately when you're not connected.
(Make sure you keep a drift file if you reboot regularly.)
