rdate.nlm and time

Ok another stupid question..

I'm using rdate.nlm on a novell server and using a Linux box to
firewall..
if I rdate to ns1.bc.net it works fine.. I have the RH5.1 package
intimed installed if thats what i need?
 but when i rdate to the firewall it just times out.. what do I need to
load on the Linux box.... and it has to be UDP not TCP..
services and inetd.conf look correct
