X fonts for emacs?

Any emacs experts out there?

I tried adding a font to x-fixed-font-alist in

                   /usr/share/emacs/*/lisp/mouse.el

As far as I can tell, I'm successfully byte-compiling and loading the modified
mouse.el. However, none of the changes which I make to

                 (defvar x-fixed-font-alist ... )

seem to have any effect. (That is, neither my new entry nor changes to labels
of existing entries appear when I "S-down-mouse-1".) Here's a fragment. ">>"
marks the new entry, which I generated using xfontsel.)

    ("Courier"
     ;; For these, we specify the point height.
>> ("L12" "-b&h-lucida-medium-r-normal-*-*-120-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1")
     ("8" "-adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--*-80-*-*-m-*-iso8859-1")
     ("10" "-adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--*-100-*-*-m-*-iso8859-1")

Ideas? Pointers?
