Hi, I am not too clear on the differences with blocking ports in
/etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf.

When I ask around where do I block ports, most people say in
/etc/inetd.conf, but what about /etc/services? I know that they are
linked in the sense that /etc/inetd.conf refers to /etc/services for
the port number, but why can't I just block in /etc/services?

For example. I wanted to block people (remotely) fingering me. So I
commented finger out in /etc/services, only to find out that I
couldn't finger remotely anymore. So I uncommented finger in
/etc/services and commented finger in /etc/inetd.conf (did a "killall
-HUP inetd") and I could finger people remotely and I tried to finger
myself and it didn't work (which is what I wanted). So I am guessing
that /etc/services is more local or...I am not quit sure. Also what's
the link between smtp and sendmail. In /etc/services it says smtp is
port 25, but if you telnet to it, a messages comes up with Sendmail
version <whatever>.

People have asked me what port sendmail is on, so I say 25, they so
no. That is smtp. Then another person asks what is on port 25 and I
say smtp and they say no, sendmail. I am confused.

Thanks, for your time

Arek
