A few questions from a helpless newbie...

When configuring X (with Xconfigurator) I entered the following info:
monitor: monitor that can do 1280x1024 at 60Hz.
server: Mach64
memory: 4meg
clockchip: ICS2595

and selected the following resolutions and colour depths:
16bit 1280x1024
32bit 800x600, 1024x768

when I attempted to 'startx' I recieved an error message saying...
"Fatal server error" and that I had no settings for 8bit depth.

I re-ran Xconfigurator entering the same info and adding:
8bit 1280x1024

I really would rather be running at 24bit 1024x768

-how do I enter parameters when starting X, to choose a resolution and depth
 other than the default 8bit

-how do I change resolution while X is running?

-how do I change the default resolution?

-MOST IMPORTANTLY! Which man page, website or document do I check so that I
don't have to trouble you with X configuration questions again?
  ya right! ;->
