try:

startx -- -bpp 16 (or 24 or whatever)

Ctl Alt + and Ctl Alt -

Note that the "+" and "-" must be the keys on the numeric pad.

Read the /usr/doc/HOWTO/XFree86-HOWTO.gz that's likely on your system.
Also try http://www.ssc.com/lg/issue30/lg_tips30.html#bpp just to get you
going on those last two.
