thanks, just found that out about half an hour ago (thank heavens for Linux
Undercover)
so... testing this out b4 I have to put it into action for a client tomorrow
there are a few files and a bunch of directories with files under /tmp so
perfect for this test
using my Exabyte exb-2501 scsi tape drive, I pop in a tape and type the
following command
tar -zcv /tmp -f /dev/nst0 (or /dev/st0)
or
tar zcvf /dev/st0 /tmp
and both come up with
tar (granchild) : cannot write to dev/st0. input/output error
tar (granchild) : error is not recoverable, exiting now
at no time do I ever hear the tape moving, ideas, suggestions?
so what about "formatting" the tape? or will it just overwrite whatever is
there since most of the work is being done at a low (raw) level.
also how does one find out what is on the tape when it comes time to
restore? lastly should one rewind the tape (and how do you do this) b4
passing it to someone else so they can get access to the tarfiles on the
tape?
any good DETAILED faq's? none of the ones I've found so far go into much
detail, especially theory and troubleshooting stuff.
