You can change the physical resolution while X is running. You cannot
change the virtual resolution or the bit depth.
If you capture the output from X startup you may find it's rejecting
many of the resolutions you specified in the config file because it
cannot find timings that fall within the capabilities of your video card
and monitor. Ctrl-Alt-Plus and -Minus (on the rightmost keypad) should
switch between any available resolutions.
