Its something they never thought of while implementing the X window
system, however, realize that X has source compatibilty to X11R* :)
Applications are told what bit depth and the resolution of the screen when
they start up
There is an application called "xmove" which allows you to do these sorts
of things, however, only to machines running at the same bit depth, and I
believe the same virtual resolution.
Windows was written with this in mind, however, some applications don't
respect it that well and go all whacky when you change the bit depth while
running.
