Let me guess: the demo was at the Exide booth, right? Do you really
think Exide would be presenting the demo if it made APC look good? :-)

In fact, the APC protocol is one of the best documented around, I
think, and there is freeware (with source available) for controlling
and using APC UPSs. So I wouldn't get too worried about that as a
criterion.
I've used APC and Best in the past, and I can recommend both of
them highly. (Hoever, I've only used the big Best systems; so I
can't speak for their 120 volt stuff.)
