Hmm...again, I had the same problem as you. I have a very crappy video
card (s3 virge with 2megs of ram) and I get 16 bit display and that is
all I need.

I ran Xconfigurator and choose the accellerated server or
whatever...but as you may of guessed my monitor and my video card
aren't exactly the greatest. I knew it could support 1024X768 and 16
bit as in winblows it did fine; but in X I kept getting only 8 bit. I
had to change the configuration in /etc/XF86Config (in redhat). It was
a bit much, as I was quite new to Linux. After about a day I figured
out what was wrong. I deleted all the other server under accellerated
server (very tail of XF86Config) except the one that had the 16
configuration and it worked.

Other things you can try is reading the man pages of xinit and startx
and stuff like that. There should be an option like startx --16display
(don't quote me) that will do that. The X86Config will config X every
time though. Also you can try something like control+alt+"+" and "-"
to increase decrease your resolution. Never tried that or the --16
thing, so see if that helps. Try irc-ing and going to #linux pplz
there are quite helpful.
