You should check out Dan Bernstein's tcpserver:
ftp://koobera.math.uic.edu/www/ucspi-tcp.html
or xinetd (on Sunsite somewhere).
Both allow you to limit incoming connections and have a number of
other nice features not found in the standard inetd.
